The "New" Jason Scott Photography

Our photo host, SmugMug, introduced a completely updated design and interface a couple days ago.

As a result, we've completely changed the look and feel of our site, and we're working hard to make sure everything is working the way it should. If you find anything that isn't working right, please let us know or leave a comment below!

Jason Talks Gear - Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II - Europe!

(Nope.. this is Allyson writing about our gear again! Jason told me I did a good job last time, so hopefully I can do so again!) 

In June, we took our first ever trip outside of North America and travelled to Europe for 10 days. We spent a whirlwind 24 hours in Paris, part of a day in Brussels, two days in Amsterdam, and then a week touring other parts of the Netherlands (Leiden, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht). We had a GREAT time! (BIG understatement...)

If we look a little disheveled in this photo it is because we had just arrived in Paris at 6am after an overnight flight! (Thanks to our friend Adam for taking photos of us during our travels! Not too often we get to actually have pictures together!)

As we were preparing for this trip of a lifetime, we were discussing what camera gear we should pack. We wanted to pack light, but we also needed to bring a lens or lenses that would be able to capture the scenery, museums, history, etc that we knew we would see on this trip.

We decided we needed to pack a wide angle lens. Knowing we would be inside dark buildings (Notre Dame, other historical churches, the Anne Frank House, Windmills in the Netherlands, etc) or out shooting at night - all low light conditions, we opted to purchase the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 II instead of the 17-40mm f/4. At f/2.8 it can take in a lot more light than the 17-40mm, perfect for the lighting conditions we knew we would experience in Europe. The 16-35mm is also a favorite among professional wedding photographers (a wide angle lens is very useful for taking photos of churches, reception halls, and other wedding locations), so it was probably about time we bought it anyway!

We didn't even really have a chance to test it out prior to our trip, and this was the only lens we packed!  Yikes! Luckily, it worked out perfectly - we took thousands of photos on our trip and have lots of great memories!

Here are just a few of the photos we took to give you an idea of the wide views and low light conditions this lens excels in (and to share some great photos from our trip). Sorry for the dismal sky in several of these - unfortunately it was rainy the whole time we were in Paris and for some of the time we spent in the Netherlands.

 

 

 

We're really excited to have added this lens to our gear and look forward to using it at several weddings we have coming up in the next few months. Stay tuned for more photos using this lens in the future!

Jason Talks Gear - Canon 135mm f/2L

(Hmm... That's not entirely true... this is Allyson writing about our gear this time! So this blog post will probably not be technical AT ALL. Sorry...) 

We bought a new lens recently that I am really excited about - We'll be using it sometimes on weddings (possibly in place of the 85mm if we are in a church where we can't get quite as close as we'd like), but mostly we've been using it for personal stuff right now, just for fun. (My favorite kind of gear purchase!)

It's the Canon 135mm f/2 L and I think I might just super glue it to my t2i (my "smaller" non-professional DSLR that I use for taking photos of our dog and our nieces and nephews) and never give it back to Jason! I  absolutely LOVE this lens! 

Here are some fun photos I took a few weeks ago of our handsome nephews, enjoying summer and catching some waves at the Ritz Carlton Beach Club on Lido Key! The 135mm was able to focus quickly which made for some really cool photos of water droplets and crashing waves! (The boys are awfully cute too, which helps!)

We've also been travelling a lot this summer. We went to Europe (hopefully the subject of a future blog post by Jason - we bought a new wide angle lens just for the trip!) and then we went to Upstate NY to visit family. Jason took some great photos of our niece and our friends' kids using this lens. It did a great job! And as he would say, "Check out that background blur!"Awesome!

 

PS - Jason's reminded me that we used this lens a couple of months ago for some engagement photos too - I guess I have to accept the fact that this is not simply a new toy for me to play with...

So far, the 135mm has been a great addition to our gear. Stay tuned for more photos using this lens in the future!

Frequently Asked Questions - How Can I Create Holiday Cards from my Beach Portraits or Wedding Photos?

The holidays are approaching and this is the perfect time to order your holiday cards! We are really pleased to be able to offer you a great selection of unique holiday cards - designs that can only be found on our host site, SmugMug - they are really different from those you will see at WalMart, Walgreens, or Snapfish. There are also loads of new designs for 2012! If you are interested in creating Holiday Cards from your Siesta Key Beach Portraits or Sarasota Wedding Photos, here's how to do that:

First, find the photo you want on your card. Select "Create a Card" from the "Add to Cart" menu.

Select which type of card you want (5x7 folded or 4x8 flat, Holiday, Christmas, etc.).

Then create your card by dragging photos in and out from the box at the right. You can change your card design by browsing the categories at the bottom. You can make your photo bigger or smaller (zoom) by using the controls on the right.

If you select a card with multiple photo spots, simply drag additional photos into place from the box on the right. Don't worry, the Jason Scott Photography watermark will NOT show up on your cards!

Add text in available text boxes (marked with a "T") to customize your card.

When you are happy with your card, use the area on the right to purchase your cards. Finish by clicking "Add to Cart."

Sometimes saving your card can take a while! Don't get concerned if it takes a long time! Cards with more photos take longer!

When it is finished, you can go back to the gallery to purchase additional prints, or go directly to the shopping cart to check out!
