Frequently Asked Questions: Which Size Digital Download Should I Order?

Gallery downloads are our most popular post-session purchase for family beach portraits. We currently offer two different sizes of digital downloads. People often ask us which size they should order.

Update 12/25/16 - as of January 1, 2017, we will no longer be offering the "high res" download. The only option will be the "full res" download. Trust us, this is the one you want anyway! We are doing this to decrease confusion and frustration that many customers have experienced! Thanks for your understanding!

Here's some helpful information so you can make an informed decision:

A 4Mpix image (“high res”) is 4 megapixels. This is a size that allows for quality printing at most reasonable sizes. If you want to print at really large poster sizes, you would probably want a larger image. (These images should be about 2000 pixels on each side.) Printing anything up to 8x10 should work fine. If all you want to do is post your images to social media or share with friends and family online, this size works great.

The “Original size" or "Full res" download is whatever we uploaded - in most cases, significantly bigger than the 4 megapixel high res download. For just a little more money, you get a lot more. Our camera shoots at 22 megapixels. We don't downsize or change the resolution of the photos when we upload. But some are smaller than they were originally because we crop them for composition purposes. So they’ll be slightly smaller than 22 megapixels, but not much.

Bottom line: the Original size gallery download is well worth the extra $50!

Frequently Asked Questions - What Happens AFTER Our Family Beach Portrait Session?

At the end of every family beach portrait session, we are always asked, "What next?" or "How do we get our photos?" Jason tells me I need to make a brochure to hand to everyone at the end of the night, but until I get around to doing that, hopefully this blog post will help!

Family Beach Portraits on Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Englewood Beach, Venice Beach, or Anna Maria Island by Jason Scott Photography     Family Beach Portraits on Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Englewood Beach, Venice Beach, or Anna Maria Island by Jason Scott Photography

1. We process your photos.

We use Adobe Lightroom for our first run through your photos. We'll delete the "duds" - photos with eyes closed, funny faces, etc. We'll also adjust the lighting on everything as needed and crop and straighten everything. (Jason is notorious for crooked horizons!)

Usually we do all of this as soon as we get home on the evening of your session. This typically takes us about one hour.

Family Beach Portraits on Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Englewood Beach, Venice Beach, or Anna Maria Island by Jason Scott Photography     Family Beach Portraits on Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Englewood Beach, Venice Beach, or Anna Maria Island by Jason Scott Photography

2. We upload your photos to our host site, SmugMug

This typically takes a couple of hours. I usually start the upload and go to bed! The photos are "magically" online by morning! Ta-da!

We try to get your photos online within 48 hours of your session, but we usually get them to you within 24 hours. During our busiest season (March-July), sometimes it might take us an extra day or two... sorry...

IMPORTANT: While your photos are uploading (and for a day or two after we send you the link), they are in an "unlisted" gallery that cannot be found by you, Google, or anybody else for that matter (unless you give out the link).

A couple of days after they are uploaded, however, we make the gallery public unless you tell us not to.  We store all of our customer galleries under the "Your Photos" menu on our website, so that potential customers (like you once were!) can see our work and not just a bunch of selected samples. But we do understand that some people want their privacy, so we're happy to keep your gallery unlisted if you ask us to, or add a password instead. Please let us know right away if you'd like us to do this... it is hard to put the cat back in the bag once we let it out!

3. We send you your photo links.

When they're ready, we'll send you TWO links. This is the spot in this process where people most often get confused. Some mail programs see two emails coming from the same person at the same time and dump them into your Junk/Spam folder. Some dump one of the two in the Junk folder. So, if you don't see TWO emails from us, please check your Junk folder!

One of the emails will have a subject line that says "For You..."

The other will say "Share with friends..."

Family Beach Portraits on Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Englewood Beach, Venice Beach, or Anna Maria Island by Jason Scott Photography     Family Beach Portraits on Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Englewood Beach, Venice Beach, or Anna Maria Island by Jason Scott Photography

4. You pick out your favorite photos.

Use the personalized link in the email intended for you to view your photos and tag your favorites

Use the sharing email to forward on to friends and family, or feel free to copy/paste the link into Facebook or your favorite social networking site. Others will be able to register to get their own personal link so they can keep track of their favorite photos.

If you click on your sharing link or on someone else's personal link, you won't be able to see your favorites anymore. If someone else clicks on your personal link, they will be able to see, add to, and subtract from your favorites. So, we don't recommend sharing your personal link.

IMPORTANT: We also post our favorites on our blog and, sometimes, our facebook page or sample gallery. (Again, if you don't want us to do this, please let us know in advance!)

Details: We'll use your last name in the blog post but we can modify that to an initial or first names or whatever by request. We don't tell where you live, names of kids, or any other identifying information. Blog posts show up on our FacebookTwitter, and Google+ pages and you are free to share them if you want your Facebook friends, etc to see the best of the best of your beach portraits!

Sample photos (our all time favorites that we want to share with the whole wide world in our sample gallery) will not contain ANY identifying information. They will post to our sample galleryFacebookGoogle+, and Pinterest. You can tag yourself if you follow us on Facebook or Google+ and your friends can see your beach portraits. Its like getting a free digital download of your best beach portraits! We retouch all photos that appear in blog posts and sample galleries, so they'll look perfect!

5. You place an order.

There is absolutely no rush to complete this step! Unlike many other photographers, we do not place an expiration date on your online gallery. It will remain online indefinitely. You can come back and order photos in a year or ten years! Or, you can order them right away!

Frequently Asked Questions - How Can I Keep Track of my Favorite Photos?

(Updated 03/18/14)

Wondering how to keep track of all your favorite photos without having to remember difficult file names or image numbers? We've got the solution!

After your wedding or beach portrait session, we'll send you TWO emails - one with a link to your own personal event page, and another to share with your friends and family. (If you don't see TWO emails, please check your junk/spam folders!)

The event page will contain one or more galleries with the photos from your event.

As you browse those galleries, you'll see a red heart underneath each photo. You can click that to tag the photo as one of your Favorites. We'll place a copy of it in a separate gallery, just for you (and us) to see. You can always click it again to undo if you change your mind.

To view your selections, just click the "See All" link under any photo, or go back to the main event page and click on the View My Favorites link at the top.

You can also click the Share Event option at the top to get a link to share with others (the same link we sent in the 2nd email we mentioned earlier!). Your friends and family can then see your galleries and can browse and buy to their hearts' content. They won't be able to view your Favorites, but they can register and tag their own.

This is a new feature we've been using recently and we hope you find it useful as you browse your photos! Please let us know if you have any difficulties using this new service!

Frequently Asked Questions - What Size Photos Should I Order? (Plus, 20% off orders over $100 for the month of August!)

Ready to order some prints from your recent wedding or beach portrait session? For many people, ordering an "enlargement" means ordering an 8x10 or possibly an 11x14. Over time, we've come to realize how easily an 8x10 can get "lost" on a large wall. When there are many people in the photo, it becomes especially difficult to "see" everyone and make out faces, etc. A 5x7 or 8x10  looks very nice in a frame, sitting on a desk or mantle. But when considering "wall art," our rule is: bigger is better!

We have 20x30 and 24x36 photos on OUR walls, and we think YOU should too! To encourage our customers to "GO BIG," we're offering 20% off any orders over $100 during the month of August! Just enter coupon code "gobig" during checkout!

Our print prices are significantly lower than most other area photographers (especially at 20% off!), making it really affordable for you to order BIG prints for your living room wall! (And don't forget to mount and/or frame your big print!)

Check out the graphics below to aid you in your decision making process! (Cute beagle not included!)

Still not sure? Check out the difference between these two images! How will you show off your photos?

Frequently Asked Questions - How do I Purchase Digital Downloads of my Photos?

Just about everybody's on Facebook now, and we know many people would rather have digital files to share online than prints of their family portraits or wedding photos. Good news - you can purchase digital downloads from your photo shoot right through our shopping cart!

How to Purchase Digital Downloads:

First, decide if you want to purchase individual photo downloads or the entire gallery. Make your selection in the "Buy" menu.

Then, select the license you want to purchase for that individual photo and add it to your cart.

For a gallery download, select "Buy Gallery Download" from the "Buy" menu:

The gallery download is our most popular purchase! Almost everyone buys it!

After making your desired purchases and checking out, you'll receive an email with a link to your downloads. You can then upload your photos to any site or store of your choosing, or to Facebook, etc. We recommend Shutterfly:

Shutterfly Special Offers. Save up to 50% on selected items such as photo books, calendars, wall art, photo gifts, and more. Offers change frequently.

Ordering Prints - Framing and Mounting Options Now Available!

We are excited to announce some additional options available RIGHT NOW in our shopping cart. Our professional lab, Bay Photo, offers several a la carte framing, mounting and print options to ensure your finished print displays a perfect, polished presentation. Framing and mounting options are available at checkout (just click the "Add Photo Extras" button in the cart beside each print!), and are currently offered at our cost - no markup - as we try out this new service. Coupons and discounts do not apply to this service at this time - any discounts will only apply to the actual print prices prior to adding these options.

Now available:
  • Mats. 3 professional picks: 1.5″ wide mats in White, Off-White and Black.
  • Frames. 14 tasteful types: Flat wood, box wood or aluminum in a variety of colors. All served with clear, shatterproof acrylic.
  • Mounting. 7 sturdy selections: 2mm Styrene, Bevel mount, Gatorfoam and 3/4″ Standouts.
  • Finishes. 5 awesome alternatives: Pebble, Canvas and Linen surface textures, Satin Laminate and scratch-resistent Protective Coating.
*Note that not all options are available for all print sizes.

Read on to find out more about your mounting and framing options.

Frames

Choose from 14 different high quality wood and metal frames. They arrive ready to display with hardware attached and clear, shatterproof acrylic front.

Mats

Add a mat to give the photo a clean, professional finish. Available in three colors: Black, White and Off-White.

Mounting Options

Styrene
This super-smooth, compact 2mm styrene board cleanly backs your print, providing durability and protection against dents, bangs and warping. Available in two colors: Black or White.

Bevel Mount
Try this elegant, lightweight option that gives your photo incredible presence, either propped up on its own or neatly framed the traditional way. Bevel Mounts create a ¼ inch border around your photo when viewed from the front. Choose from Black, Silver or Gold.

Gatorfoam
Mount your prints on this rigid black foamboard to add durability and prevent warping and damage. Note: Gatorfoam is slightly thicker and lighter in weight than the Styrene backing.

3/4" Standout
This feather-light, ready-to-hang option is a contemporary favorite! Prints are mounted on a block with thick black edges, letting your photo stand off the wall. Pre-drilled holes are included on the back for easy hanging.

We recommend mounting any prints 16x20 and larger on styrene or gatorfoam if you plan to frame them on your own! If you order Framed Prints through us, they are automatically mounted on 1/4" Foam Board to ensure that the print does not warp.

Paper Textures and Finishes

Textures
Matte is flat, so why not upgrade your paper? Choose from Pebble, Canvas or Linen surface textures to add subtle dimension to your finished print.

Protective Coating
Guard your masterpiece against scratches and other surface damage. Bay Photo’s Protective Coating is available in Glossy and Lustre finishes to give you peace of mind.

Satin Laminate
Beautiful and strong, this Satin Laminate finish protects your print from everyday wear and tear. And it gives your photo a polished, gentle sheen.
